The St. Martins Fair started in 1958. Local farmers would bring their produce to sell throughout the summer and early fall. Bushels of cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, sweet corn, apples plus other area crops would be sold and purchased by homemakers to can and preserve for the upcoming winter. The smell of fresh dill would fill the air. Along with the bushels of vegetables were pails of Gladiolas, Sweet Peas and other garden flowers adorning the farm stands.
One section of the fair was dedicated to farm animals such as baby chicks, roosters, rabbits, goats and pigs. They were always fun to see their cages propped on the back of pickup trucks or trailers.
Refreshments and drinks were served in the local taverns. A bottle of beer or cold soda always hit the spot.
An assortment of farm tools and household items could be found. Over the years the fair seems to have grown a little bit each year. You can find almost anything that you are looking for today. Fresh produce, household goods, antiques, collectibles, crafts and tools just to name a few. Parking is available at each end of the fair. The fair is mostly along St. Martin’s road between Forest Home Ave. and Church St.
You are sure to find something that you need. Save all heavy purchases such as pumpkins for last part of your visit. Take a shopping cart with you because it can be a long haul back to your car.
Special events for this Labor Day Weekend are the famous Klement’s Racing Sausages and the UW-Madison Marching Band.
